Among his professional colleagues and clients in the steel fabrication industry, Malcolm Curry is well known for his thoroughness and his attention to detail. As one fabricator client puts it, “What Malcolm measures up goes in and works.”

And despite his thoroughness, Malcolm also has a reputation for delivering on time.

Hands-on fabrication experience

Malcolm’s eye for detail and his determination to get things right are only partly due to his innate character. They also owe much to the fact that he has come up through the ranks of the metal fabrication industry, and has had hands-on experience of all stages of fabrication projects.

He knows that for a metalwork project to have the best possible outcome, it needs to be accurately measured and drawn up. That way, the fabrication is carried out to the correct dimensions and problems are not encountered during installation.

Career history and qualifications

At the age of 16, Malcolm Curry became an apprentice sheet metalworker – soon promoted to Skilled Craftsman – with Marshall Brothers in Watford. While at Marshalls he studied for the City and Guilds Sheet Metalwork qualification at Ordinary, Advanced and Full Technological Levels, gaining a Distinction in all three. From Marshall Brothers, Malcolm went on to long-established Watford fabricators CF Baker Ltd.

There he progressed through a full gamut of roles, from Assistant Works Manager and then Works Manager to Project Engineer and ultimately Senior Project Engineer. During this time he studied for and gained a raft of relevant qualifications:

  • Certificate in Works Management (AM Inst. Mgt)
  • ONC Mechanical Engineering (Distinction)
  • HNC Mechanical and Production Engineering (Distinction)

Fabrication services consultancy

Sadly, CF Baker went the way of many other companies in recession-hit Britain, and finally closed its doors in December 2008. But Malcolm immediately found himself in demand as a freelance consultant, carrying out site surveys, producing arrangement and detail drawings and managing individual metalwork projects for fabricators in London and the South East of England.

Please visit the Gallery page to view some Malcolm’s past projects, which include balconies, staircases, balustrades and security fencing.

The Projects page describes a selection of past assignments in a little more detail.

Malcolm is based in Watford, Hertfordshire, but is willing to travel within a reasonable radius.
